This guide exists so you do not have to hold all of it alone. We have photographed surprise proposals on the Kona and Kohala Coast every week of the year for nearly a decade. We know the beaches, the light, the wind, the small things that go sideways when people are nervous. What follows is the way we walk every client through it.

The Timeline
The earlier you reserve, the more your photographer can do for you. Here is what a smooth plan looks like — working backwards from the day. Tap any milestone.

Confirm travel dates, your resort, and roughly where on the coast you'd like the moment to happen. Start on her ring size if you haven't already.
Ring in hand or shipping confirmed. We send you our planning-call link — a 15-minute call to align on location, timing, and your secret signal.
Planning call complete. You know the exact beach, exact time, and exact signal. We watch the weather and reach out if anything looks off.
Pull your outfit. Charge your phone. Tuck the ring somewhere safe. Re-read the Day-Of Game Plan. Then sleep.
Arrive 10 minutes before your photographer is positioned. Take a breath. Walk her to the spot. Give the signal. The rest takes care of itself.
Choosing Your Location
The west side of the Big Island has more cinematic backdrops per mile than almost anywhere on earth. The right choice depends on three things: how private you want it, the look you're after, and where you're staying.
Anaehoomalu Bay (A-Bay)
West-facing crescent beach framed by coconut palms, with golden-hour light that turns the entire bay rose and amber. Adjacent to the Waikoloa Beach Marriott — easy logistics if you're staying there. Lively early evening, quieter at sunrise.
Kikaua Point Beach
Calm, protected cove with very few beachgoers, especially on weekday mornings. Best for couples who want the moment to feel like it belongs to just the two of you.
Mauna Lani Coastline
Ancient fishponds, black lava rock against turquoise water — a film-still backdrop. Choose this if you want the images to feel cinematic and a little wild.
Mauna Kea Beach
Wide expanse of soft sand and open ocean. Perfect for couples who want the clean, postcard look — endless beach, endless blue.
Tree-shaded coves near Kailua-Kona
Sunrise on a small quiet beach with no one else around. Best for early-morning proposals when she'll never see it coming.
We cannot photograph at Hapuna Beach or Waialea Bay (Beach 69) due to permit restrictions. Everywhere else on the Kona and Kohala Coast is fair game — and our team handles all permits and logistics. You never see the paperwork.
Timing & Light
Light on the Kona coast is the real gift. Soft, warm, west-facing, and unlike anywhere else. The window you choose changes the entire feeling of the moment.
Sunset
Sessions start between 5:00 and 6:15 p.m. depending on the season. We time the proposal for about 20–30 minutes before official sunset — that gold-to-rose-to-purple stretch when the sky is at its most romantic.
Sunrise
Sessions begin at 7:00 or 8:00 a.m. The beaches are nearly empty, the air is cool, the light pinker and softer than at sunset. If you want stillness, privacy, and a sense of beginning, propose at sunrise. Available on request.
If it's overcast
Overcast is not a problem — it is often a gift. Soft, diffused light makes skin glow and removes harsh shadows. Some of the most emotional images we capture happen on cloudy days.

Hiring a Hidden Photographer
A surprise proposal photographer is part artist, part secret agent. Here is exactly how it works when you reserve with us.
The planning call
About a week before, you'll have a 15-minute call with your photographer. We align on three things: the exact location, the exact time, and the visual signal that tells the photographer the moment is about to happen — a hand on the ring pocket, a specific phrase, a deliberate walk to a marked spot.
Arrival & positioning
Your photographer arrives 20–30 minutes early, dressed casually to blend with other beachgoers. They position 30–80 feet away — often behind a coconut palm, on a low rock outcropping, or along a public path. They look like a tourist taking landscape shots.
The lens
Most proposals are photographed with a 70–200mm or 100–400mm lens. This captures tight, candid frames from a distance — without your future fiancée ever seeing the camera.
The signal
You walk her to the spot. You give the signal. The photographer starts shooting. Every beat is captured: the walk in, the first words, the drop to one knee, her reaction, the embrace, the ring on her finger.
The reveal
Once the moment passes, your photographer steps in with a warm congratulations. From there, the session transitions into a flowing engagement experience while the emotion is still fresh.
What if she spots us?
If she catches a glimpse, your photographer reads it instantly and adjusts. The story shifts from "she had no idea" to "she had a feeling." The portraits are still beautiful. The moment is still real.
The Ring & the Small Logistics
The little things that calm a nervous mind. Handle these early and the day itself gets to be about her.
Getting the ring there
Carry the ring in your personal item or carry-on, never checked. TSA is used to seeing ring boxes — you don't need to declare anything. If the box feels obvious at security, transfer the ring to a small soft pouch for the flight and return it to the box once you land.
Storing it at the resort
Most resort safes fit a ring box. If yours doesn't, the front desk can secure valuables at all of our partner resorts — Waikoloa Beach Marriott, Hilton Grand Vacations, Outrigger Kona. Don't leave the ring in your room without a safe.
The day-of pocket
Front pants pocket is best — easier to access, less obvious than a jacket. In swim trunks or board shorts? Ask your photographer to carry the ring discreetly and hand it to you at the signal moment. We do this often.
What to wear
Linen, light cotton, soft neutrals. Avoid logos, busy patterns, and pure white. For her, a flowing dress in a warm tone — sand, blush, sage, soft coral — photographs beautifully against the water. Barefoot or easy sandals.
Who to tell ahead of time
Almost no one. The fewer people who know, the lower the chance of an accidental slip. Your photographer is your secret-keeper. If you want family on FaceTime right after, give one trusted person a heads-up about the window — not the exact moment.

Once the moment passes, we guide you through three or four short setups: a slow walk along the shoreline, a few quiet portraits with the ring visible, a champagne toast if you've brought one, and a classic embrace as the sun sinks into the ocean.

Your full gallery lands in your inbox within 48 hours — often before you fly home. Most couples send proposal images to family the same week and post the announcement before the trip ends.
Coming back later
Many of the families we photograph today first met us at A-Bay or Mauna Lani holding a ring box. They came back a year later for engagement portraits, then a babymoon, then a one-year-old session, then a reunion. We are built for that continuity.
